LIVERMORE -- The Livermore school district has announced the appointment of a new director of special education, MaryAnn Frates, who began work July 1.

Frates comes to Livermore from the Castro school district, where she served as coordinator of special education for the past three years. She replaces George Anich, who will become the special education director for the Vallejo school district.

Frates holds a master's degree in public administration, a multiple subject teaching credential, and an education specialist instruction credential. In addition, she is in the process of completing

her doctor's degree in educational leadership.

Frates lives in San Leandro, where she serves on the city's Human Services Commission.
