OAKLAND — When police arrived at the Dublin home of Selma Hill the evening of Jan. 7, there was chaos.
There was screaming and shouting. Stun guns and batons were found on the floor as well as unfired bullets. A bloodied woman was found the top of the stairs. A man, who appeared to be lunging at another person, was Tasered by an officer.
In Alameda County Superior Court on Thursday, that was the scene recalled by Dublin police Officer Jared Hattaway, one of the first to respond to Hill's home on Peppertree Road. Later that night, police would find the body of the 91-year-old woman dumped in a trash can outside.
Hattaway was testifying at the preliminary hearing of Rosa Hill, Mei Li and Ping Li. Rosa Hill, 34, and her mother, 56-year-old Mei Li, have been charged with the murder of Hill and the attempted murder of the woman's grandson, Eric Hill, the estranged husband of Rosa Hill.
Investigators say the suspects came armed to the house to take the 2-year-old daughter of Eric and Rosa Hill, of whom Eric Hill has sole custody. They say Mei Li and Rosa Hill killed Selma Hill, then lay in wait for Eric Hill to return home with his daughter.
"Mr. Hill was shouting about his 2-year-old daughter being in the house and about a gun," when officers arrived, Hattaway told the court.
Ping Li, 68, Mei Li's husband and Rosa Hill's father, has been charged as an accessory after the fact. Police found him in a parked car not far
Hattaway said Mei Li, who was bleeding from the head, was dressed in dark clothing. Rosa Hill stood silently nearby.
Hattaway said, that in the confusion, Eric Hill was Tasered by a different officer for moving after being ordered to stay sstill.
Police were called to the home by relatives of Selma Hill's fiance, who had asked them to check on her when she did not answer the phone.
Lester Rowe, 91, of Fremont, testified Thursday that he last saw her on Jan. 4 when he dropped her off at her home.
"We were embracing and saying goodbye to each other," he said, adding the last time they spoke on the phone was about 10 p.m. Jan. 6. When they were apart, he said they talked daily by phone — once at 4 p.m., while they drank an afternoon cocktails, and again at 10 p.m.
But on Jan. 7, Rowe said he could not reach her at 4 p.m. He called five more times before 5 p.m. He finally called his son and his wife and asked them to check on her.
Rowe's family was waiting at the home when Eric Hill arrived and went upstairs to look for his grandmother.
In court Thursday, Eric Hill testified that he law saw his grandmother alive the evening of Jan. 6,when he brought his daughter up to her room so great-grandmother and great-granddaughter could play.
The Lis are residents of Antioch. Rosa Hill and Eric Hill were residents of Fremont, but Rosa Hill currently lives in Oakland.
