HAYWARD — A bicyclist was struck and killed by an AC Transit bus just hours before a fatal train accident Monday night.
The first incident was reported at 6:44 p.m., when a man riding a bicycle near Huntwood Avenue and Lustig Court was hit by a bus on the 91 line, fire officials said.
Arriving rescue workers determined the 37-year-old man was already dead. As of Tuesday evening, his identity had not been released. He is believed to be a Hayward resident, police said.
The driver of the bus told investigators that the bicyclist came out of nowhere and crossed directly in front of him, cutting diagonally across the traffic lanes. The bus had substantial damage to the windshield, but none of the four passengers was injured.
According to a Hayward police statement, "the preliminary investigation suggests that the bicyclist was possibly under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision."
The bicycle did not have any lights or reflectors, and the rider was not wearing reflective or safety gear, police said.
The bus driver will be placed on paid leave and tested for drugs and alcohol as part of routine procedure. Witnesses told police the driver was not doing anything distracting when the crash occurred.
In the second accident, the Fire Department responded around 9:30 p.m. to the area around W. Winton Avenue and Alexander Court following reports of a pedestrian hit by a train.

An Amtrak spokeswoman said the train involved, carrying 200 passengers, was a Coast Starlight traveling north from Los Angeles to Seattle. No one on the train was hurt.
The train was delayed for two hours.
