OAKLAND — A 92-year-old woman was sexually assaulted at a public park in West Oakland on Sunday afternoon, police said.

A 57-year-old man, identified as Nathaniel Brown, was arrested on rape and kidnapping charges and has admitted his involvement in the attack, Special Victims Unit Officer Carletta Garrett said.

About 2:30 p.m. Sunday, the woman was walking through a park in the 1300 block of Mandela Parkway, as she routinely does, Garrett said. A man walked up to her, pulled her into a nearby area of the park and began attacking her, police said.

Police said the woman was able to convince the man to let her go with a ruse, though they declined to elaborate. The woman fled to her nearby home and told her caregiver what had happened, and the caregiver called police.

About an hour after the reported attack, Oakland police Officer Joe Rasler spotted a man matching the suspect's description walking close to the park and arrested him.

Brown has a lengthy criminal record and gave police a West Oakland address they had not been able to confirm by 11 a.m. today.

The woman was treated at a hospital. Officers described her as "feisty" and applauded her efforts to defend herself.
