Three candidates are seeking the two seats on the Fairview Fire Protection District board on Nov. 2.
Incumbent Angelo Costanzo is joined in the race by newcomers Mike Miraglia and Jeff Rosier.
The five-member board runs a district that provides fire and emergency services, through a contract with the city of Hayward, to unincorporated areas of Alameda County, including Five Canyons, above Hayward.
Both Miraglia and Rosier said they would push the district to continue or expand its fire and earthquake safety educational programs, something important in such a rural area.
"This is a great area in the East Bay," Miraglia said. "I hope to help keep it that way by addressing any fire department and homeowner needs and concerns as they are presented to the board."
Rosier said he also is committed to making sure the area's firefighters have the training and tools they need, as well as maintaining quality facilities and equipment.
Rosier knows the importance of that from firsthand experience.
"Our family experienced a chimney fire in 2008," Rosier said. "It was a frightening event. The fast response from the fire department saved our home from any damage."
Miraglia said one of his goals if elected would be to raise community awareness of the district's purposes and goals while also making sure tax dollars are spent wisely.
Costanzo, contacted several times, did not provide any information in time for this
