OAKLAND -- A 51-year-old bicyclist was killed Sunday night when he was struck by an SUV that was backing down a street in East Oakland, police said.

Neither the name of the bicyclist or the driver of the SUV were released. The collision happened about 9:49 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of Bancroft and 78th avenues.

Police said the bicyclist was riding southbound on 78th Avenue and crossing Bancroft when he was struck by a Dodge Durango driven by a 45-year-old Oakland man.

Police said the SUV was backing up in the eastbound lane when it hit the cyclist. It was not clear if the SUV was backing out of a driveway or was going in reverse for another reason.

The driver remained on the scene. The bicyclist died later at a hospital.

Police said alcohol does not appear to be a factor.

Anyone with information about the collision can call police at 510-777-8540.
