CHINO HILLS - The gunman who opened fire at a Chino Hills shopping center Thursday night was an off-duty Huntington Park police officer who was involved in a road rage incident with four other men.
San Bernardino County sheriff's deputies say one of the two men wounded in the shooting remains hospitalized today at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton.
Deputies received several 9-1-1 calls at 7:52 p.m. regarding shots fired at The Shoppes in Chino Hills.
They arrived and found two wounded men. Several other people were detained at the scene.
Deputies determined the Huntington Park officer was in one vehicle and four men were in another on the 71 Freeway when a road rage incident occurred.
Both drivers exited the 71 and stopped at the Shoppes parking lot.
The officer said he saw objects in the hands of two of the four men as they approached him. He armed himself with a gun and fired several shots, striking two of the men.
Deputies said the wounded men ran a short distance and collapsed.
Two other men ran from the scene, but were apprehended by sheriff's deputies.
Deputies found an 8-inch knife and a can of pepper spray within the crime scene.
Sheriff's officials did not release the name of the officer or the four other men.
