OAKLAND -- An Indiana man, who just had his iPhone snatched from his hand by a 17-year-old thief on a bicycle Wednesday night in downtown, was able to run down and detain the suspect with the help of a security guard, police said Thursday.
The theft happened about 9:20 p.m. Wednesday in the 1200 block of Broadway.
Police said the 28-year-old Indiana man was in Oakland working as a contract employee for a business. He was walking to a bus stop playing a game on his iPhone when the suspect rode by and grabbed the device from him.
The youth rode off with the man in foot pursuit. At some point the youth abandoned the bicycle and ran into City Center where a security guard joined in the chase.
They captured the youth and held him for police. The man got his iPhone back.
Police said the suspect admitted the Wednesday night theft and a similar one in the same area on Nov. 1. He told police he got $150 for the iPhone taken Nov. 1 but would not say from whom.
The youth was arrested on suspicion of two counts of grand theft.
