OAKLAND -- An 81-year-old woman was in critical condition Thursday afternoon after being struck by a car in downtown Oakland, police said.

Police and emergency crews responded at 7:36 a.m. to the intersection of Seventh and Madison streets for a report of a vehicle hitting a pedestrian, police said.¿

When officers arrived, the woman was unresponsive.

The woman, who lives in Oakland, was transported to a hospital to be treated for major head trauma from the collision.

The driver of a Hyundai sedan, a 34-year-old Oakland resident, remained at the scene and was cooperative with investigators, police said.

A preliminary investigation revealed the woman was crossing the street at 7th and Madison streets when she was struck by the sedan.

Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the collision, police said, but the incident remains under investigation.

Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to call police at 510-77-8570.
