PITTSBURG -- One person was burned in a hot oil spill at a business on California Avenue and Loveridge Road, Contra Costa Fire officials said Friday.

At 3:45 p.m., fire crews were called to Antioch Building Materials, located on the 1300 block of California Avenue in Pittsburg for a reports of spill, possibly of liquid asphalt or hot tar.

Once at the business, crews found one person had sustained burns due to an accidental release of hot oil, said Contra Costa Fire Protection District Battalion Chief George Laing.

The extent of that person's injuries was not immediately known.

The spill was contained quickly, he said, and there is no hazard on-site or off-site.

Though there is a noticeable odor of oil in the air, Laing said it is just a nuisance and is considered nonhazardous.

The county's hazardous materials crew is also at the business and is conducting air monitoring for adverse health effects, but none have been found nor are any expected.

The cause of the spill is still under investigation.
