MARTINEZ -- An Antioch man suffered a brutal beating before his throat was slit and he was stabbed in the heart, according to a prosecutor who filed felony charges against five people in connection with the slaying.
Eighteen-year-old Vincent Basulto, his 31-year-old aunt Rose Basulto and Rose's boyfriend, Joshua Thayn, 34, were each charged Wednesday with murder with use of a gun and a knife in the Sunday death of 54-year-old Daniel Ingram.
Ingram's girlfriend, 53-year-old Lynn Jaeger, and Avery Klein, whose age was unavailable, were charged with being an accessory to murder after the fact.
Deputy district attorney Mary Knox said the homicide went down like this: Rose Basulto and parolee Joshua Thayn and their young children had been living with the victim and Jaeger rent-free at Ingram's house in the 5000 block of Rodeo Circle. After they were asked to move out, the younger couple accused Ingram of stealing a welder and other items.
Following an argument over the property, Rose Basulto called over her nephew, Vincent Basulto.
Neighbors could hear Ingram screaming for help as Vincent Basulto hit him in the face with an 8-pound weight, dropped a microwave on his head and broke his arm. He also threatened him with a gun before killing him by slitting his throat and stabbing him in the back, through his heart.
Knox said the killing occurred around 11:30 p.m., but Jaeger didn't call police until 3 a.m. The group allegedly went out after the killing, bought alcohol and concocted a story.
The defendants were expected to be arraigned Wednesday or Friday.
This story has been corrected to say that defendant Joshua Thayn, not Vincent Basulto, is a parolee.
