Whether you're gearing up for a Shark Week viewing party or hosting a "Sharknado" watch-a-thon, you'll need proper libations to enjoy these cinematic treasures properly.

The Discovery Channel's annual Shark Week viewing frenzy returns to the airwaves on Aug. 4 with its usual array of hammerheads, great whites and many, many teeth. Meanwhile, Syfy rebroadcast its shlocktastic viral sensation last week and has greenlit plans for "Sharknado 2," which will be set in New York City.

No word as yet on whether the sequel's weather action will include the hurricanes and tornadoes that swept Los Angeles in the original film, but we are eagerly anticipating sharks in Central Park. And we've got "Sharknado" safely stashed on our DVR to help pass the time until the sequel airs.

Last week, as anticipation built for the Syfy airing, we turned to Sam Babalola, mixologist at Oakland's swanky Southern restaurant, Picán, for help in mixing up a suitable shark-inspired cocktail. New Orleans is not exactly known for tornadoes, but it knows other weather calamities very well indeed. So Babalola gave us The Sharikane, a shark-plus-hurricane concoction with a blood orange tinge. No chain saws necessary.

The Sharikane

Serves 1 "Sharknado" fan

1 sprig rosemary

1 1/2 ounces Skyy strawberry vodka

1/4 ounce lemon juice

1/4 ounce lime juice

1/2 ounce passion fruit puree

1/2 ounce simple syrup

Soda water

1/4 ounce blood orange syrup

1. In a cocktail shaker, muddle the rosemary.

2. Add the vodka, lemon and lime juice, passion fruit puree, simple syrup and ice. Shake vigorously.

3. Strain into a hurricane glass with ice. Top with a splash of soda water, float the blood orange syrup on top, and garnish with rosemary.

Shark Week: The Discovery Channel's popular shark-centric week kicks off Aug. 4, with hours devoted to "Megalodon: The Monster Shark Lives," "Voodoo Sharks," "Spawn of Jaws" and more. (Don't let all that sensational "I Escaped Jaws" footage scare you out of the water. You are more likely to win an Academy Award than to get eaten by a shark.) Find Shark Week details at dsc.discovery.com/tv-shows/shark-week. You'll find a link to 10 shark conservation projects there too.
'Sharknado': Syfy knows a good thing when it sees one. "Sharknado" will air again at 9 p.m. July 27 and 7 p.m. Aug. 22. Details: www.syfy.com.
