Sip and slide: Palo Alto's uber-popular SliderBar is heading to Berkeley, bringing its menu of tasty three-bite burgers, Belgian fries (with 13 dipping sauces!) and swanky sips, including craft beer and wine on tap. Grand opening festivities are slated for Saturday -- 1,000 complimentary sliders, people!
-- at Ashwani Dhawan's newest eatery, the third in what's turning out to be a cool little Bay Area chain.
Wondering what's between those artisanal buns? The new Berkeley eatery (2124 Center St., www.sliderbarusa.com) will be showing off some of SliderBar's best-loved little burgers, including The Old Timer (Niman Ranch beef), Please &Q's (pulled pork), and the Magic Mushroom (balsamic-marinated portobellos, onion rings and swiss). Genius move: They do brunch sliders, too. Dhawan is introducing a few new menu items for the blue-and-gold crowd, including a meatball slider, and a Red & Gold, which includes corned beef, sauerkraut and "gold sauce." The Red slider is a nod to the San Francisco 49ers and not, you know, that school in Palo Alto. We suspect a Stanford plot anyway, especially after the SliderBar publicist tried to tell us that Stanford's rosy school color is "cardinal, not red." They're probably dicing onions with the Axe. (Editor's note: Just let it go. Maybe Cal will win this year.)
Go Bears: While we're on the topic of Cal, football season starts Aug. 31 and FIVE at Berkeley's Hotel Shattuck Plaza is gearing up for the influx of fans. New exec chef Stephane Tonnelier is working on suitable blue-and-gold offerings, including pregame bear claws and bear-itos and postgame Golden Bear cocktails, plus libations that honor the opposing team, starting with a Purple Haze for the Northwestern Wildcats. Tonnelier hails from San Francisco's award-winning Boulevard, where he was executive sous chef. His résumé also includes stints in the kitchens of Paris' Hotel George V, Michelin-starred Copenhague and Flora Danica. Tonnelier will unveil his new, seasonal, modern American menu later this fall, but don't worry about those Golden Bear cocktails disappearing anytime soon. Cheering for Cal is a FIVE tradition.
