Paramount will reboot "The Naked Gun" franchise, with Ed Helms playing bumbling police detective Frank Drebin.
Can't they just leave us with our happy memories of Leslie Nielsen? Dear God -- is NOTHING SACRED!
Variety reported that "Night at the Museum" writers Thomas Lennon and R. Ben Garant will write the script. As you may or may not know, the first three "Naked Gun" films -- based on the (tragically) short lived 1982 ABC series, "Police Squad," created by Jim Abrams and David and Jerry Zucker of "Airplane!" fame -- grossed $275 million at the box office, according to the New York Daily News.
The franchise stalled after the 1994 installment "Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Installment," which was released a couple months before one of its stars, O.J. Simpson, was arrested for (allegedly) murdering his ex-wife and her friend. Allegedly.
Helms, 41, starred in "The Hangover" trilogy and this year's "We're The Millers." He was supposed to star in a reboot of the "Vacation" franchise, which has stalled, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
