Gwyneth Paltrow convinced Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter not to run a story saying her marriage to Coldplay singer Chris Martin was in trouble.
I know, I know ... I too have a hard time believing Gwyneth Paltrow has control issues. That's just crazy talk.
Nevertheless, the New York Daily News reported the 41-year-old actress had a 20-minute phone conversation with Carter, during which she convinced him not to run a story, which also may have examined rumors of both Paltrow and Martin having affairs.
Paltrow and Martin announced Tuesday on the actress' Goop website (I don't know what that means) that they were separating, in a not-at-all-pretentiously-titled post called "Conscious Uncoupling."
Carter address killing the story in last month's issue of Vanity Fair, with his own interestingly titled piece, "The Paltrow Affair."
Oh yes he did (snap).
Sorry. It just felt appropriate.
Anyway, Carter wrote that the piece would have been about the "hate/love-fest that encircles" her, but that in the end, it was bound to be a disappointment.
The Daily News reported Paltrow was also concerned that rumors of affairs were about to go public.
"It had been an open relationship for quite some time," a source close to the couple told the paper. "I expected this was going to happen, it was just a matter of when. They were just very different people."
Martin was rumored to have something going on with Kate Bosworth (which he has denied), while Paltrow supposedly got close with entertainment lawyer Kevin Yorn and Elle Macpherson's billionaire husband, Jeffrey Soffer, during her 10-year marriage. Paltrow, Yorn and Soffer have all denied the rumors.
Just days after sources supposedly told the Daily News that Paltrow and Martin were close to breaking up, Paltrow was seen kissing her ex Donovan Leitch in September at a baseball game. Both have said they're just friends.
That must be a very special friendship.
Martin attended a Grammy after-party Jan. 26 without Paltrow, at which he allegedly seemed involved with an attractive young brunette in a black dress, with whom he left.
Come on ... maybe she didn't have cab money.
Another source reportedly said Martin has been incredibly sad about the demise of the relationship.
"He felt bad about it for the past three years," the insider reportedly said. "She takes herself too seriously and keeps feeding the machine. He hates the fame. All the rumors about the cheating got to him."
Paltrow's rep Steven Huvane declined to comment.
