PITTSBURG -- The Department of Motor Vehicles' Pittsburg office in the Highlands Square Shopping Center closed Friday afternoon for renovation.

The Buchanan Road office is scheduled to reopen at 8 a.m. Sept. 29, said Jessica Gonzalez, a DMV spokeswoman.

Gonzalez said the 30-year-old office needs renovating, including new flooring, paint and replacing furniture. Other repairs will include restriping the parking lot and addressing any handicapped accessibility issues, she said.

The DMV closes local field offices for maintenance frequently, Gonzalez said. The Concord office has been closed since April 11, and is also scheduled to reopen in late September.

The 34 employees at the Pittsburg office will be sent to other local offices to help offsets the increased demand

Local residents are encouraged to visit the El Cerrito, Oakland, Tracy or Vallejo field office for any DMV inquiries, Gonzalez said. The Walnut Creek office is also an option, though it is extremely crowded with customers resulting from the Concord closure, she said.

Another option is going online to renew registration and driver's licenses, change addresses, or request a personal driver record.
