FREMONT — Three teenagers were beaten and a night school teacher was hit with a beer bottle Tuesday night during a gang fight at the Fremont Adult School, according to police.

One of the combatants suffered a cut to his head after being hit with an 8- to 10-inch wrench, and the teacher suffered a minor head injury and a cut to a finger during the melee, Sgt. Chris Mazzone said. No one else was hurt, he said.

Witnesses told police that the three teenage beating victims — who apparently were gang members — were sitting in class and showing their blue baseball cap scrawled with a gang-related phrase to a student sitting behind them. That student was a suspected member of a rival gang, the sergeant said.

That student left during class, but returned with at least three other people when class was over. The group then attacked the three teens as they left the classroom, Mazzone said.

The attack spilled back inside the classroom when the beating victims retreated there for safety. The attackers used several weapons, including a plumber's wrench, screwdriver, beer bottle and several chairs, the sergeant said.

By the time police arrived, all of the combatants had left. But minutes later police learned that one victim — the teen who was hit with the wrench — was being treated at Washington Hospital.

Police interviewed that victim, who said he did not want further police involvement. Police also interviewed

the victim's friends who were involved in the melee.

During questioning, one man allowed officers to search his car, the sergeant said. Officers found gang paraphernalia and several weapons inside the vehicle, including wooden mallets and a pair of brass knuckles, the sergeant said.

No one has been arrested, but police said the case still is under investigation.
