OAKLAND — An Oakland mother who buried her slain first-born son in 1992 lost her second and only remaining male child to gun violence Saturday night.
Bobby Hall, 25, was visiting an apartment on the 6800 block of MacArthur Boulevard about 11 p.m. Saturday when he was shot and killed, police said. His older brother, Jesse Rahim Hall, was killed in 1992.
"When he was killed, Jesse was 22," said Mona Hall, mother to both men. "When Bobby turned 23, he came to me and said, 'I made it.' I said, 'I know, I was counting too.' He said now he'd be able to live a long time. Little Bobby was so excited he was able to make it past 22."
Mona Hall wrote a book about the 1992 killing, titled "Thru a Mother's Eyes: The Story of Jesse Rahim Hall, My Murdered Child."
She said Sunday that she now has more work to do.
"Now I'm fitting to sit down and write another book, about my second murdered child," she said. She laid much of the blame for their deaths on the prevalence of guns in Oakland life.
"Until somebody in one of the gun manufacturers' lives gets killed by one of their guns, it's not going to stop," she said. "These CEOs and people sitting on their boards, making all these bigger guns holding more bullets — they haven't lost anybody by a bullet, because if they did it would change their outlook on life."
Mona Hall said Bobby was a rapper known throughout the Bay Area for performances that decried violence and sought
"Little Bobby never been arrested, never served time, never dealt dope," she said. "All he did was try to make an honest living and give love to everybody who came across his path."
Bobby Hall was pronounced dead at the scene when officers arrived Saturday. He was an Oakland resident but lived in a different part of town, police said. Investigators on Sunday had not determined a motive for the killing and did not have anyone in custody.
Hall's death is the 73rd Oakland homicide so far this year. At this time last year, the city had recorded 67 homicides.
"I just want whoever done this caught," Mona Hall said. "His father and myself just want whoever did this caught."
Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering an up to $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the case. Anyone with information can call police at 510-238-3821 or Crime Stoppers at 510-777-8572 or 510-777-3211.
