OAKLAND — The killing early Tuesday of a 33-year-old man continued a spate of recent violence that left three Oakland residents dead and at least eight injured in a dozen shooting incidents since Saturday.

George Anthony was found fatally shot about 2:45 a.m. inside a Mazda 626 that crashed through a fence into a backyard in the 8700 block of Bancroft Avenue. No one else was injured.

Sgt. George Phillips said that police later determined Anthony was shot in the 2100 block of 88th Avenue, but drove across a median and through a fence into the yard.

He said Anthony was from West Oakland and police do not know why he was in East Oakland or why he was shot. No arrests have been made.

The shooting was one of five from Monday night into Tuesday morning, and the only one to claim a life.

At 9:18 p.m. Monday, two men were shot in the 900 block of Filbert Street. An 18-year-old East Oakland man suffered multiple wounds and a 19-year-old West Oakland man was hit in the foot. Both men said they had no idea why they were shot and no arrests have been made, police said.

Then, at 10:45 p.m., a man was shot in the leg in the 2600 block of 82nd Avenue, and at 11 p.m., a mechanic was shot in the arm at his business in the 2700 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Way. He drove himself to a hospital.

Four young men were seen running from the scene, but no arrests have been made in the case.

Sgt. Phillips said police have no motive or suspects in custody in the shooting.

The Monday night violence came about two days after Bobby Hall, a 25-year-old aspiring Oakland rapper and anti-violence spokesman, was shot and killed in an apartment in the 6800 block of MacArthur Boulevard about 11 p.m. Saturday.

That killing was one of several shootings over the weekend, about which police provided few details as investigations proceed.

A woman was shot in the back in the 1700 block of 90th Avenue about 1:15 Saturday morning, and was reported by police to be in critical but stable condition at a hospital.

A man was shot at 2:30 a.m. Sunday in the 1400 block of 62nd Avenue; from there he traveled to a hospital. Police said he is in stable condition.

A person or persons unknown shot at an Oakland police officer around 12:15 a.m. Monday, in the 5300 block of Bancroft Avenue.

The officer was not hurt and no arrests have been made.

Oakland police also shot two suspects, injuring one and killing another after a four-mile car chase beginning at about 10 p.m. Saturday in Oakland ended with the fleeing suspects crashing their vehicle into a patrol car at Doolittle Drive and Davis Street in San Leandro.

Monday's fatal shooting was the city's 74th homicide of the year. Last year at this time there were 69 homicides in the city.

Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering up to $10,000 in reward money in the Anthony shooting and up to $5,000 in reward money in each of the other shootings.
