OAKLAND — Two Oakland men were shot to death within two hours in apparently unrelated incidents Thursday night and early Friday in East Oakland.

At about 11:48 p.m. Thursday, Fidel Jimenez Lopez was shot outside his residence in the 5800 block of East 17th Street. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators said Lopez, an auto mechanic, was standing outside chatting with friends. Neighbors heard gunshots. Lopez was dead at the scene when police arrived. The Alameda County Coroner has scheduled an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death, an investigator said.

The second shooting happened about 1:48 a.m. Friday in the 1700 block of 81st Avenue. Avnell Durham III, 24, was found dead at the scene. Homicide detectives said Durham and friends were in the area at a memorial service for a homicide victim killed a year ago. No one else was shot.

Police know of no suspects in either shooting.

The two killings were the 75th and 76th homicides of the year. At this time last year, there had been 70 homicides.

Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering up to $10,000 as rewards for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the shooters in each case.
