Gutierrez, a 6-foot-3, 200-pound native of Chihuahua, Mexico, averaged 13.4 points this past season for a team that was 32-1 and lost by two points in the final of the National Prep Championships in New York. Earlier, Gutierrez was honored as Most Outstanding Player at the National Prep School Invitational, an award that went to Michael Beasley the year before.
"With the type of players Coach Montgomery was so successful with during his time at Stanford, I think Jorge is a perfect fit for him at Cal," Findlay coach Mike Peck told

Gutierrez had 12 points, 15 rebounds and seven steals in Findlay's semifinal victory in the national prep tournament. For the year, he also averaged 6.0 rebounds, 2.7 steals and 2.6 assists.
Gutierrez is regarded as a combination guard. Montgomery expressed the need for another player to complement his two returning sophomore point guards, starter Jerome Randle and backup Nikola Knezevic.
A spot on the roster opened late last month when Oregon high school guard Garrett Sim, after signing with the Bears last November, was granted release from his scholarship. Sim has since signed with Oregon.

Holman finds new home
The often winding road that has been Richmond native Eli Holman's basketball career has landed the 6-foot-9 center at the University of Detroit Mercy.
Holman, who announced last week he was transferring out of Indiana following just one season, has enrolled in summer school courses at Detroit Mercy and will play for new coach Ray McCallum, the former IU assistant who recruited him to play for the Hoosiers.
"I'm actually happy right now that I have the support of my hometown and my family," Holman said Wednesday night.
Holman will be required by NCAA transfer rules to sit out the 2008-09 season before becoming eligible to play as a sophomore.
"To be with Coach Mac, who has been there for me through the hard times, I think it can be worth it," Holman said. "When he started recruiting me, he recruited Eli Holman the person, he didn't recruit Eli Holman the basketball player. Our relationship is very strong."
Holman played just six games as a freshman at Indiana this past season, averaging 1.0 points and 1.7 rebounds in 7.5 minutes per outing before suffering a wrist injury.
Holman departed Indiana last week amid controversy when he apparently became angry during a meeting to discuss his transfer with new Hoosiers coach Tom Crean. Security was called, but no police report was filed.
"What happened between me and Tom Crean was a big misunderstanding," Holman sad. "I want to wish Indiana, the players and the coaching staff the best of luck."
One of the nation's top prospects two years ago, Holman had a controversy-filled career at Richmond High. In January 2006, he was suspended by the California Interscholastic Federation for portions of his junior and senior seasons after an incident in which he shoved a game referee.
McCallum, a former head coach at Ball State and Houston, said he has no concerns about Holman's character.
"I've known Eli for a couple years, and I've watched grow and develop into a fine person," McCallum said. "He's a young man that has shown he can handle himself away from home, a young man who done a great job in the classroom."
