To prepare for the Northern California Postage Stamp Show coming to the Westin Hotel in Millbrae July 12-14, let's review a few fun postage factoids:
1. The first postage stamp, the Penny Black, was issued by Britain in 1840 and pictured a young Queen Victoria.
2. Children and teenagers were early collectors of stamps in the 1860s and 1870s. Later, adults got involved, and the hobby and study of stamps began to grow.
3. Stamp collecting is less popular today than it was in the early 20th century, but estimates still show about 25 million people enjoy the hobby in the United States. Worldwide, the number of stamp collectors is believed to be around 200 million.
4. Celebrity stamp collectors include John Legend, James Earl Jones, Patrick Dempsey and Maria Sharapova.
