FREMONT — A 19-year-old Tracy man had a portion of his nose sliced off Tuesday when he was attacked by four men as he walked through the 29 Palms neighborhood.

The man, whom police would not identify, needed 15 stitches to close the wound where a 1-1/2-inch-by-1-inch piece of flesh had been cut off during the 3 a.m. incident, said Detective Bill Veteran, spokesman for the Fremont Police Department.

The man, who was heavily intoxicated, according to police, was beaten and then hit in the face with a sharp instrument as he walked near Coco Palm Drive and Banyan Tree Road.

After the attack, he banged on a neighborhood resident's door for help.

"He was so intoxicated that he did not know that part of his nose was cut off," Veteran said after reading the report.

Police on Tuesday said they have not established a motive for the crime, and have all but ruled him out as a victim of a robbery.
