SAN CARLOS -- A shooting and vehicle crash sent three people to the hospital Sunday afternoon, closing lanes on southbound Highway 101 for nearly four hours, authorities said.
Belmont police said the shooting took place on Highway 101 at the Ralston Avenue exit around 3:41 p.m., with the vehicle crashing about five minutes later into bushes on the side of the freeway, just north of the Holly Street exit in San Carlos.
The car, a 2009 red Dodge Charger, had been struck by several bullets, according to Belmont police. The vehicle was reported to be swerving on the freeway before it crashed.
At least one person inside the car was injured by gunfire; all three people in the car -- two men and a woman -- were taken to a hospital for injuries either from the shooting or the crash.
No other vehicles were involved in the crash.
Southbound Highway 101 was completely closed after the shooting. The freeway was reopened by about 4:30 p.m., but it took until about 7:30 p.m. for all lanes to be cleared.
Belmont police said the incident may have started on Highway 101 at or near Highway 92 in San Mateo, but did not offer details on how it began. There was no description of suspects or a suspect vehicle.
