SAN JOSE -- A San Jose man running around the freeway was hit and killed by a vehicle Friday night and it appears the driver may have sped away, authorities said.

The unidentified pedestrian was dead when the California Highway Patrol arrived at the scene of the crash, on the southbound lanes of Highway 87 just before Park Avenue in San Jose at 8:15 p.m., Officer D.J. Sarabia said.

"The guy was running in and out of the lanes," Sarabia said. But it was not immediately clear why.

Some cars stopped but none had damage consistent with hitting someone, although one vehicle that stopped had been hit by another car. Authorities are looking for a red car that left the scene and may have been the one that hit the pedestrian.

"It's kind of a mess out there," Sarabia said.

The CHP closed at least two lanes of the freeway for at least two hours on Friday night.

It was the second freeway fatality in the South Bay Friday, after a driver died when a vehicle burst into flames on Interstate 880 in Milpitas at 10:50 a.m.
