At the Pleasant Hill Library's Hobbit party, part of the One City, One Book event in which all Pleasant Hill residents are encouraged to read the same book, characters from J.R.R. Tolkien's classic "The Hobbit" took center stage. Volunteers Jasmine Shinn, 11, and Hanna Nasseh, 13, help three boys at the Oct. 9 party play pin the beard on Gandalf. There were other Middle-earth crafts and games for children of all ages. Also in October, adults participated in a discussion of the book, or other Tolkien work. "The Hobbit" was selected for this year's community reading event because it is a good book to read, said Heidi Dolamore, the library's senior community manager, and in anticipation of the release of the movie in December.
