SAN JOSE -- A man, possibly a transient, was struck by a small truck Saturday afternoon and later died from his injuries.

Around 2:48 p.m., San Jose police officers responded to the 100 block of South Montgomery Street after a report that a truck had hit a pedestrian.

The pedestrian, believed to be Hispanic and in his late 30s or early 40s, was taken to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, said Officer Albert Morales of the San Jose Police Department.

The 41-year-old driver of the truck may not have seen the victim, Morales said, and was being cooperative with the investigation.

Morales said specifics regarding the incident are still unknown and that officers from the department's Traffic Investigation Unit had been out to the scene again to speak with witnesses to get a clearer understanding of what occurred.

The pedestrian did not have any identification on him, Morales said, so it is possible the victim may have been a transient.

The investigation is ongoing.
