BERKELEY -- Police are asking city residents to help them catch a serial burglar known for snagging cigarettes during his crimes.

Berkeley police detectives are currently investigating a series of commercial burglaries in the city over the past month. The suspect, shown in pictures released by the department, is believed to be responsible for two burglaries and an attempted burglary in Berkeley, along with additional burglaries in neighboring cities.

According to police, the suspect gets into his targeted business by smashing a window. Once inside, he takes cigarettes.

Police described the suspect as an African American male, 25 to 35 years old, with pierced ears and wearing an olive green baseball cap, a black hooded sweatshirt and dark pants.

Anyone with information about the burglaries or the suspect's identity is asked to call the department's Crimes Against Property Unit at 510-981-5737 or the non-emergency line at 510-981-5900. If a person wishes to remain anonymous, they can call Bay Area Crimes Stoppers at 800-222- TIPS (8477).
