CAMPBELL -- A man who allegedly led Campbell police on a vehicle pursuit and crashed into the side of a home then ran away was arrested early Monday after neighbors spotted him hiding in their yard.
Rogelio Pena, 27, of San Jose was taken into custody by Campbell police sometime around 3 a.m. after leading officers on a vehicle pursuit that ended with a Honda Accord striking the side of a home near Davis and North Central avenues, according to Campbell police Capt. David Carmichael.
Pena was arrested about one block away when neighbors notified officers of a man hiding in their yard.
At 2:43 a.m. officers tried to stop a speeding Honda Accord near Payne and South Winchester avenues in San Jose when the car sped away, Carmichael said. Officers pursued the Accord for about two minutes, a chase that went mostly through residential neighborhoods, Carmichael said.
The chase ended when the Accord hit the side of a house and mostly landed in a side yard. The collision caused minor damage to the home, Carmichael said.
The driver ran away and tried to evade police by hiding behind some bushes.
"Neighbors came out and said, 'There's a guy hiding in our yard,'" Carmichael said.
The Accord was reported stolen in San Jose on Thursday, and inside the car officers found drugs and numerous stolen items, including gym bags, tools and electronics, Carmichael said. Police are working to identify the owners of the stolen property.
"Nobody was hurt, and we were able to recover stolen property, so we're happy with that outcome," Carmichael said. "And we were able to take a suspect off the streets."
