More than $20,000 worth of checks were stolen from a Menlo Park church last week, according to the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office.

Bethany Lutheran Church, at 1095 Cloud Ave., reported on Jan. 29 that checks totalling $20,020.50 were taken from its main office. They included personal tuition checks made out to the church's preschool and two checks payable to the church, including one from its district office, according to the sheriff's office.

There were no signs of forced entry and the sheriff's office said the suspect or suspects likely entered the office through an unlocked door. Information on when the theft occurred or whether anyone attempted to cash the checks was not available on Wednesday.

So far, no suspects have been identified and the investigation is ongoing, Deputy Rebecca Rosenblatt said.
