Campo takes first place in academic decathlon

Campolindo High School has won top honors in the Contra Costa County High School Academic Decathlon.

The high school's Red Team took the top spot in the countywide competition. The team received the first place award at a ceremony Feb. 4 at the Contra Costa County Office of Education.

The nine-person team will represent the county in the California State Academic Decathlon March 14-17 in Sacramento. The winner of that competition will advance to the National Academic Decathlon to be held April 25-27 in Minneapolis, Minn. Campolindo's Blue Team placed second and was followed by the Acalanes High School team in third.

Campolindo high school student Zach Scherer was honored with the Top Overall Academic Decathlon Individual Award.

Approximately 170 high school students participated in the event.

Campolindo music programs Feb. 21, 28

The Campolindo High School Orchestra, under the direction of Maestro Johnny Johnson, will hold its Winter Concert on Thursday, Feb. 21 at 7:30 p.m. in the Campolindo Performing Arts Center, 300 Moraga Road, Moraga.

Special guest artists will be Mariya Borozina, violinist with the San Francisco Opera Orchestra and the San Francisco Ballet Orchestra, and Pamela Freun-Stripen, violinist and artistic director of the Gold Coast Players. They will perform the Mozart Sinonia Concertante. Also featured are student chamber groups and Haydn's Symphony No. 82 in C Major.

The concert is free and open to the public.

The Campolindo Winter Band Concert will be held on Thursday, Feb. 28 at 7:30 p.m. in the Campolindo Performing Arts Center, 300 Moraga Road, Moraga. Special guest artist is Diane Maltester, playing the concertino for Clarinet and Band by Frank Bencriscutto as well as a full program by the Concert and Symphonic Bands. Admission is free and open to the public.

Kindergarten registration -- Moraga

Kindergarten and transitional kindergarten registrations for the 2013-14 school year is being held today at elementary schools in Moraga.

Sign-ups will be offered at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the following locations: Camino Pablo School, 1111 Camino Pablo; Los Perales, 22 Wakefield Drive and Donald Rheem Elementary Schools, 90 Laird Drive. A child is eligible for transitional kindergarten if their fifth birthday is between Oct. 2, 2013 and Dec. 2, 2013.

Parents or guardians must register at the school of residence for their child. School boundary information can be found at the district's web site, http://district.moraga.k12.ca.us, or by calling the district office at 925-376-5943. Those unable to register can contact their school of residence directly.

Documents will be needed to verify age eligibility, residency and immunizations.

Haislet named to dean's list

Orinda resident Garrett Haislet was named to the fall 2012 dean's list at the University of Alabama.

Haislet is currently a junior majoring in business. He is a 2010 graduate of Campolindo High School.

Haislet is the son of Scott and Pam Haislet of Orinda.
