Devante Downs, rated a four-star running back (out of five) by rivals.com, orally committed to Cal via Twitter on Thursday.
However, the 6-foot-2, 230-pound senior at Mountlake Terrace High in Lynnwood, Wash., won't play this season, according to mitnews.com. Downs suffered a torn ligament in his knee at a team camp in June, according to the report.
Stanford's Patrick Rodgers and Cal's Brandon Hagy were eliminated from the U.S. Amateur at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass. Corey Connors ousted Rodgers 5 and 3 in the afternoon. In the morning, Rodgers won four straight holes on the front nine en route to a 3-and-2 win over Greg Eason. Hagy lost to Scottie Scheffler in 20 holes, joining four Cal teammates on the sideline. Hagy bogeyed second extra hole, the par-3 second, to give Scheffler the win. Scheffler won the U.S. Junior Amateur last month.
Racing returns to Golden Gate Fields on Friday when the Albany track opens a 19-day meet that runs through Sept. 15. Post time opening day, as well as Friday, Aug. 23, and Friday, Aug. 30, is 3:45 p.m. First post all other days is 1:15 p.m.
