I'll provide 'citizen' training
I read, with interest, Tom Shetterly's letter of July 25 (WC Journal) ... he said that four city employees and one elected official be removed from office immediately for "integrity of character."
I have lived in Walnut Creek since 1976 and for the past 10 years have volunteered to assist the Citizens Institute program shortly after graduating from the class in 2004, This program provides citizens a chance to meet our elected officials, counsel members and city employees that make our great city work.
I met Cindy Silva when she was first elected to the City Council and at subsequent meetings she attended to find out more about how our city operated, particularly those areas involving finances. She impressed me as a leader with integrity and character. I also that he indicated (Lori) Tinfow, who is a professional individual who has worked for many years to ensure we created a first class library in Walnut Creek and also handled financial areas.
Mr. Shetterly also mentioned Ken Nordoff, our current city manager, who displays quite effective leadership, and maybe he failed to report a firing of a temporary employee to the police in Walnut Creek in a timely way. By this time he had been apprehended by another police department. He also mentioned the former police Chief Joel Bryden, who plans to coach basketball at Las Lomas High School, is another professional who spent five years as our chief of police.
It is evident that Mr. Shetterly has recently arrived in Walnut Creek, and he does not understand what integrity and character means. I believe that at the next Citizens Institute in spring 2014, I can attempt to schedule him for this program if he desires, so he can learn a little more about our professional citizens and its elected officials and city employees.
How about an American Defense League?
According to Martin Mawyer of Christian Action Network, a dangerous trend which is rearing its ugly head around the world -- specifically in the European Union -- is coming to dozens of locations across the United States. This trend manifests as areas termed "no go zones," where Muslims are allowed to install their own courts, governments, justice and punishments. In the documentary "Homegrown Jihad," there are mentioned dozens of Islamic training compounds opening here under the name, "Muslims of the Americas." It would seem prudent, in the face of this obvious threat to our traditional way of life, to dwell not solely on local issues, but to focus on larger issues that are beginning to gain strength in America.
How did we get to this point? We are in OUR land; and we allow ourselves to be intimidated by a group of people who cling to a culture which is not only foreign to ours but also shows nothing but contempt for our founding document, the Constitution. Sounds like it is past time for an American Defense League.
The United Kingdom has an English Defense League, and France, a French Defense League. Holland, its Dutch Defense League. Israel, as well.
I opt for an American Defense League! To patrol our cities and defend our citizens.
