DISCOVERY BAY -- It's the stuff of childhood memories and now baking chic.
Gourmet cupcakes will be in the spotlight during the Oct. 12 Rocktoberfest in Discovery Bay.
Spearheaded by Lions Club member Amanda Dove, the contest has drawn "a lot of attention from amateur and professional bakers from Contra Costa, San Joaquin and Alameda counties," she said.
The idea was discussed during a Byron-Delta Lions Club and Discovery Bay Chamber of Commerce meeting in August, with everyone agreeing that it would be a fun addition to the yearly event.
"Cupcakes are very fashionable right now, and who doesn't like cupcakes, right?" Dove said. "I posted the idea on Facebook for feedback, and it spread like wildfire, so we knew we had a hit."
There are three prize categories -- best amateur cupcake, best professional cupcake and overall best decorated. Judging will be at 2 p.m. and winners announced by 4 p.m.
Because of space limitations, only about 20 contestants will be accepted. Cupcake participants can sell their tasty treats at the event. The entry fee is $20, and the registration deadline is Tuesday. The judge's panel will be a mix of Lions Club members and professional bakers.
Proceeds from the contest will benefit the club's many charities, including the blind, special needs children, local schools "and many other wonderful local causes," Dove said.
In addition to the tasty cupcake competition, Rocktoberfest activities include live music, a kids' alley, mechanical bull riding, vendors, music, a car and motorcycle show, specialty beers, food and more.
The festival runs from 2-6:30 p.m. in the Discovery Bay Shopping Center, 14840 Highway 4.
