MARTINEZ -- Pleasant Hill insurance agent Matthew Rinn will fill the vacancy on the Contra Costa Community College District board.
Rinn, who was to have been sworn in Wednesday night, was one of 12 applicants vying to represent Ward 3, which covers Pleasant Hill, Concord, Pacheco and most of Martinez. The opening on the five-member governing board was created by the death last month of longtime trustee Sheila Grilli. The term expires in December 2014.
Rinn, who owns an insurance agency, was the 2011 Pleasant Hill Business Person of Year. He is chairman of the Pleasant Hill Chamber of Commerce, sits on the Pleasant Hill Education Commission and is a member of the Irvin Deutscher Family YMCA advisory board.
Rinn attended Saddleback Community College in Mission Viejo. He ran unsuccessfully for a Pleasant Hill City Council seat last year.
Among the 11 other applicants were Martinez City Councilman Michael Menesini and Martinez school board trustee Kathi McLaughlin.
The Contra Costa Community College District includes Los Medanos College in Pittsburg, Contra Costa College in San Pablo, Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill and satellite campuses in Brentwood and San Ramon. The district serves about 62,000 students.
