State water managers warn of low reservoirs
California water officials are warning that low water levels in reservoirs across the state could mean that conservation measures will be necessary to get through next year.
With little chance for record-rain conditions to develop in the Pacific this winter, the Fresno Bee reported that the state could be headed for trouble.
Mike Cowin of the state Department of Water Resources said a drought has not been declared, but water managers will face a challenge if 2014 is dry. California is coming off one of the driest winters on record.
One killed, six wounded in drive-by shooting
Police said one man was killed and six others wounded after a drive-by shooting Sunday morning at a Sacramento Halloween party.
The party was promoted online as being an adults-only event at a business called Studio 8. Police told KCRA-TV that the party was illegal because promoters were charging people to attend what was supposed to be a private event.
Witnesses told police that just after 1:30 a.m., a midnight blue, two-door BMW drove by, and someone inside opened fire on people as they were leaving the event.
The victim was a 28-year-old father of three.
Volunteer divers work to clean up ocean
Volunteer divers have dredged up 900 pounds of debris, a half-dozen lobster traps and 1,400 feet of trap line in an effort to clean up the ocean around California's Channel Islands.
The Ventura County Star reported Sunday that the Huntington Beach-based nonprofit group Ocean Defenders Alliance began scouring the area for abandoned ocean gear in September.
They have found everything from anchors to decayed traps. Last week, divers recovered a 200-pound net.
Police officer shoots man to death at hotel
A Banning police officer shot and killed a man during a confrontation at a hotel after the man allegedly brandished a handgun.
A Riverside County sheriff's sergeant said a man who was not a hotel guest began knocking on doors about 4 a.m. Sunday looking for a woman. The Desert Sun reported that a hotel employee called police.
Sgt. Jeff Buompensiero said the officer and the man had a physical altercation at the hotel elevator.
The officer fired his gun, and the man died at the scene.
