HAYWARD -- Ten residents have been displaced after a driver crashed into a two-unit apartment building Monday afternoon, a fire spokesman said.

A resident in one of the apartments heard tires screeching at about 3 p.m. and looked outside just as the driver of the Ford Mustang crashed through a bedroom, Hayward fire spokesman Capt. Don Nichelson said.

The apartment building, at Jackson and Grand streets, has been deemed unsafe, leaving 10 residents without homes, authorities said. One resident was in the building at the time of the crash. It appears speed was a factor in the crash, Nichelson said.

There were no passengers in the car. No one was injured.
