The top-ranked Cal men's soccer team posted a 3-2 victory over San Diego State at Goldman Field on Friday, giving coach Kevin Grimes career win No. 150.
The Bears (11-1-2, 5-0-1 Pac-12) scored three goals in a six-minute flurry in the first half, including two by Seth Casiple, to take a 3-0 lead against the Aztecs (5-9-1, 2-5-1).
"One hundred and fifty wins simply means I've had the pleasure of coaching tremendous student athletes," said Grimes, in his 14th season at Cal. Stanford (7-5-2, 1-4-1 Pac-12) dominated play against third-ranked UCLA (9-3-4, 4-1-3) but fell 2-1 at Cagan Stadium. The Cardinal's Jordan Morris slipped past two defenders in the 31st minute to score. UCLA's Gage Zerboni tied it in the 40th, and Nathan Smith got the go-ahead goal two minutes into the second half. Ryan Felix headed in the goal with just 2.4 seconds left in overtime to give Loyalo Marymount (9-3-2, 5-1-1 WCC) a 1-0 win at Saint Mary's (4-7-4, 2-3-2). The Gaels have required OT nine times this year. Sandra Ley scored off a corner kick from Kaitlyn Fitzpatrick (Amador Valley High), but the No. 21 Cal women's soccer team (9-4-5, 2-4-3 Pac-12) lost 3-1 at Washington State. Cal keeper Kat Messinger got a red card in the 84th minute. Vanessa Leo had 14 points on 7-of-10 shooting, leading the Santa Clara women's basketball team to an 81-47 exhibition win over Humboldt State. The top-ranked Cal women's swim team (4-0) rolled 163-111 over Wisconsin. Freshman Missy Franklin swam the 200-yard backstroke for the first time in college -- she's the world-record holder at 200 meters -- and won in 1 minute, 55.28 seconds. She also took the 200 individual medley in 2:00.89. Freshman Celina Li (Foothill High) won the 1,000 freestyle (10:03.85) and 200 breaststroke (2:18.14). The No. 3 Cal men's team (3-0) won the first nine events on the way to a 151-131 win over No. 18 Wisconsin. Tyler Messerschmidt took the 100 free (44.06 seconds) and 200 free (1:37.79). Despite two goals from Collin Smith, the No. 5 Cal men's water polo team (13-5, 2-2 MPSF) saw a four-match win streak end with a 6-4 loss at No. 2 UCLA (22-2, 3-1). The fourth-ranked USC women's volleyball team (19-3, 9-2 Pac-12) posted a 25-23, 24-26, 25-12, 25-23 win at No. 22 Cal (13-7, 6-5), two days after prevailing at Stanford. Adrienne Gehan had 19 kills and 20 digs for the Bears. Sixth-ranked Stanford (19-3, 9-2 Pac-12) hosted UCLA (12-8, 3-7) at Maples Pavilion on Friday night.
The San Francisco Bulls (2-3-1-0) suffered a 6-2 road loss to the Colorado Eagles (4-2-0-0). The Bulls' Dale Mitchell and Mark Lee each extended their four-game point streaks.
