Cal's Steven Birnbaum and Santa Clara's Julie Johnston were among the 30 semifinalists for the MAC Hermann Trophy given to college soccer's player of the year.

Birnbaum, an All-Pac-12 first-team selection, leads the sixth-ranked Golden Bears with 10 goals and 21 points in 18 appearances. Expected to be one of the top 10 MLS draft picks, Birnbaum also has led a Cal defense that has recorded seven shutouts.

Cal plays host to No. 4 Maryland on Saturday for a trip to the College Cup.

Johnston, a U.S. national team member, had 12 goals and eight assists for the high-scoring Broncos, who lost in the third round of the NCAA tournament.

The Hermann Trophy will be awarded Jan. 10.

  • Cal senior outside hitter Adrienne Gehan was named to the All-Pac-12 volleyball team. Senior setter Joan Caloiaro and junior opposite hitter Christina Higgins each earned honorable mention, while libero Maddy Kerr was named to the Pac-12 All-Freshman team.

    Gehan was a member of the Pac-12 All-Freshman team in 2010 and was on the 2013 Preseason All-Pac-12 team. She ranks sixth in the conference with 4.11 kills per set. Gehan also averages 3.02 digs per set and leads the Bears with 23 service aces. Gehan also is one of the Bears' primary passers on offense.

    This marks the 12th year in a row the Bears have placed at least one player on the All-Pac-12 Team.

    Cal (17-12) opens play in the NCAA tournament Friday in Madison, Wis., against North Carolina.

  • The Cal men's water polo team (18-8), which captured its final two matches of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament, had four players -- Hunter Gettelfinger, Collin Smith, Aleksa Saponjic and Colin Mulcahy -- named to the MPSF All-Conference team.
