Five Carondelet High School students received Jefferson Awards for outstanding community service.
At a Nov. 26 ceremony, senior Nicole Garcia and sophomore Taylor Smallwood were recognized for continuous service; and senior Kaitlyn Pahler, junior Loren Couture and sophomore Shastina Wilson received the special project award. Nicole volunteers at Kaiser Permanente and has expanded her efforts to knitting more than 200 hats for newborn and premature babies. Taylor has been dedicated to providing freedom and confidence to the blind by training guide dog puppies for seven years. Kaitlyn worked with the Counseling Department at Carondelet to educate students about sexual harassment and assault prevention. Loren started "Gifts for Giggles" to provide Christmas gifts for children who otherwise would not receive them. Shastina spent a week in Haiti helping build the foundation of a house for an unpaid schoolteacher, and took care of the children at the New Vision Orphanage.
