Concord honor roll students at Oregon St.

Concord students made the scholastic honor roll during the fall term at Oregon State University in Corvallis, including one on the straight-A list (4.0 GPA) and three on the B-plus list (3.5 GPA or better). To be on the honor roll, students must carry at least 12 hours.

    Mt. Diablo Unified School District kindergarten registration

    Preregistration of children eligible for transitional and regular kindergarten in August 2014 will be conducted at all Mt. Diablo Unified School District elementary schools on a first-come basis for most schools from 9 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m., beginning Feb. 4.

    Preregistration of children to attend kindergarten at Monte Gardens Elementary will be from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and 1 to 2:30 p.m. Jan. 24. Only children from the waiting list who have received written confirmation will be registering on that day.

    Sequoia Elementary will hold its kindergarten registration from 8 to 11 a.m. and noon to 2 p.m. Jan. 28, in the school library. Students will be called from the waiting list and given specific instructions about what will be needed.

    Kindergarten registration for the Cornerstone Family School program will be 9 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m. Feb. 4, at Ygnacio Valley Elementary. Only children from the waiting list who have received phone confirmation may register on that day.

    Children who will reach the age of 5 on or before Sept. 1, 2014 are eligible for kindergarten in August. Children who will reach the age of 5 between Sept. 2 and Dec. 2, 2014, are eligible for transitional kindergarten in August.

    Parents should bring the following documents with them: an original birth certificate or some other official documentary proof of the child's birth date; three original documents to verify where the child resides (one must be a photo I.D.); and a written immunization record from a health care provider indicating that all immunization requirements have been met.

    Concord teens named to city's parks commission

    Christopher James Bennett, Connor Kafka and Sam Suri (alternate) were appointed by the Concord City Council to serve as youth members on the city's Parks, Recreation and Open Space Commission.

    The students are volunteers at the Concord Library and members of the Teen Advisory Group, which creates and holds activities, tutoring sessions and technological programs.

    Bennett is a senior at Concord High, co-captain of the Debate Team and is attending the Academy of Art University to prepare for a career in animation, film and art history.

    "I thought it was a great opportunity to learn first hand how my city government works," he said.

    Kafka is a junior at De La Salle High School and plans to pursue a double major in engineering and computer science. He is on the Peer Helpers Club, and is a member of the National Honor Society and lacrosse team.

    "I chose to apply for the position because I thought it would be a great way to advocate for teens in our area," he said.

    Suri, the commission alternate, is also a junior at De La Salle looking to major in finance and international relations. He is vice president of the Model U.N. Club, treasurer of both Toastmasters and Jefferson Awards clubs, and a member of the National Honor Society, and junior class council.

    Suri said, "I applied to the commission to carry out changes I wanted to see in my community."

    Young writers workshop for middle schoolers

    The Mt. Diablo Branch of the California Writers Club and the Contra Costa County libraries are sponsoring a free workshop for middle school students in preparation for the annual Young Writers Contest.

    Contra Costa County students in grades 6-8 are invited to attend the free workshop from 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Feb. 1, at the Walnut Creek Library, 1644 N. Broadway.
