Authors giving readings in the Bay Area in the coming week include the legendary Beat poet Michael McClure of San Francisco, who will observe the 50th anniversary of the publication of his "Ghost Tantras," a manifesto to the animal consciousness within us, at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 15 at Moe's Books, 2476 Telegraph Ave., Berkeley.

Bay Area writer Barry Gifford will also be in reflective mode when he is at the Mechanics' Institute in San Francisco at 6 p.m. Jan. 15 to discuss his "The Roy Stories" with Peter Maravelis of City Lights Books. The book is a collection of semi-autobiographical short stories Gifford has written, spanning the American South and Midwest from the 1940s through the '80s. The event, at 57 Post St. in San Francisco, is free to Institute members, $15 for the general public.
