DISCOVERY BAY -- A utility pole knocked over by a driver late Wednesday afternoon resulted in the closure of Highway 4 in both directions for hours, causing a major traffic backup said a California Highway Patrol spokesman.

The crash was reported at at Bixler Road around 3:28 p.m. when a black Dodge Charger struck a light pole that tumbled, wires and all, across all lanes of the highway, said CHP Officer John Fransen

An ambulance was called to the scene, but it was not immediately known if the driver was injured.

The collision shut down the highway in both directions while crews wait to get the pole fixed and upright. Officials could not estimate when the road might be reopened.

Drivers can expect serious delays. The CHP has suggested drivers traveling eastbound to Discovery Bay should continue on Bixler Road to Newport Drive. For those heading to Stockton, use Byron Highway and head over to Interstate 205.
