The spot: 401 E. Taylor St., Suite 115, San Jose; www.bagi.org.

The vibe: To locals, it's BAGI, a public-access downtown glass-working facility that has fully functional glassblowing, fusing and torch-working studios. But to a couple looking for a new "experience" date, the hot shop is the perfect place to tuck in and fuse creative talents with melting, malleable glass fired at 3,000 degrees. Make it a double date with the two-hour, "Party of 4" class, where a trained instructor helps two couples create their own plates, sun catchers or coasters with a wide variety of colored, flat glass.

Tuition: $200 for the "Party of 4" plus $10 if you want to slump your work of art, which means turn it into a three-dimensional piece. Or, sign up for one of the Valentine's Day classes ($40 to $89) and create a paperweight heart, fused glass heart, or heart beads for your special someone.

For the couple who: Likes to turn up the heat.
