This week's games to watch

Freedom at Heritage, boys basketball, Friday, 5:30 p.m. -- The Patriots and Falcons meet in a game that not only features dynamic players Elliot Smith and Shon Briggs, but could also help decide the Bay Valley Athletic League champion.

Campolindo at Miramonte, boys basketball, Friday, 7:30 p.m. -- The longtime Lamorinda rivals square off as the Cougars look to maintain their grip on first place in the Diablo Foothill Athletic League. Miramonte entered the week with seven wins in its past eight games, and beat Campolindo 68-67 in Orinda last year.

Carondelet at Deer Valley, girls basketball, Saturday, 4 p.m. -- The Wolverines have been dominating their Bay Valley Athletic League foes so far this season but should get a stiff test when they host the Cougars in a nonleague clash between Contra Costa County powers. Carondelet entered the week in first place in the East Bay Athletic League.

Newark Memorial at Moreau Catholic, boys basketball, Wednesday, 7:30 p.m. -- Newark Memorial had little trouble with Moreau Catholic in the teams' first Mission Valley Athletic League meeting earlier this month, but the Mariners expect a closer game next week when they play in their sold-out gym.
