The spot: Creek Monkey Tap House, 611 Escobar St., Martinez; www.creekmonkey.com.

The vibe: You share a love of home brewing and have hit every craft beer festival in Northern California. Well, once you hear how this downtown Martinez tap house got its name, the two of you will flock there for your next fill of Oaktown Brown.

According to the folks at Creek Monkey, from the late 1950s until 1975, the George Matthews Great London Circus spent their winters in the Alhambra Valley. Legend has it that while the circus was in town, a number of South American squirrel monkeys escaped, found their way into the Alhambra Creek and eventually formed a feral population. Word around Martinez is that people still hear their cries in the night. A few have even spotted them.

Don't believe it? Check out the pub for yourself while these unusually warm winter nights continue. Grab a table by the creek, sip on any one of 19 rotating local brews, nibble on seasonal, organic brew pub grub, such as clam strips ($7.95) or a pulled pork sandwich ($10.95), and see if you can spot one for yourselves. Just don't give them any beer, OK?

For the couple who: Brews together.
