GILROY -- Police arrested a suspect in a Tuesday night shooting that left a 68-year-old man dead and another man critically wounded, although officials said the second victim is expected to survive his injuries.

Martin Gonzales, a Gilroy resident, was slain after a physical confrontation with a man in his 30s on Mantelli Drive in front of Las Animas Park around 6:10 p.m. Police said other men got involved in the scuffle, but believe the party involved in the initial altercation pulled out a handgun and fired at least four to six shots, with bullets striking Gonzales in the abdomen and the second victim in the torso.

Despite rescue efforts, Gonzales was pronounced dead at the scene. The other man, who is 34 years old, was taken by air to a trauma center but is expected to leave the hospital soon, said Gilroy police Sgt. Pedro Espinoza.

Based on evidence and witness accounts, police arrested a man believed to have fired the shots without incident on Wednesday. No further information about the suspect was immediately available.

Police are still determining what spurred the fight. The suspect was being interrogated Wednesday evening.

The shooting was the first homicide of the year for Gilroy. There were three in 2013.
