SAN RAMON -- The De La Salle soccer team beat California and got some help from San Ramon Valley on Thursday to claim its third straight East Bay Athletic League championship.

De La Salle entered Thursday, the final day of the regular season, one point behind Monte Vista in the EBAL standings. But the Mustangs' 3-1 loss to rival San Ramon Valley opened the door for the Spartans (14-6-3, 11-3-0 EBAL), who got a goal and two assists from Nick Mitchell to beat the Grizzlies 3-0 and leapfrog into first place. California finished the year at 8-11-4 overall and 3-9-2 in the EBAL.

De La Salle's victory should earn it another high seed for the North Coast Section Division I playoffs, which begin next week. The Spartans have won five straight section titles.

"We weren't focusing on the result of the MV game and the coaches had us focusing on our game," Mitchell said. "The result is awesome but we have a long road ahead."

Alex Raymond got San Ramon Valley (15-7-1, 9-4-1) on the board with a goal in the 10th minute, but Monte Vista (17-3-2, 10-3-1) responded five minutes later with a Reid Gratsch goal.

But a goal by Andrew Evans on Kalle Sjorgell's corner kick gave the Wolves a 2-1 lead in the 18th minute. Casey McSunas scored in the 57th minute to give San Ramon Valley a 3-1 lead.

"It feels really good for the team to come together after all the adversity we've been through this year," Evans said. "We probably deserve a middle seed in the playoffs, because we have a few losses, but we know our potential and we are confident going into NCS."
