Pittsburg's stellar run comes to an end On Feb. 22, the Pittsburg High boys soccer team's 19-game win streak came to an end with a 3-2 overtime loss to Amador Valley in the second round of the North Coast Section Division I playoffs. The Pirates ended the season with a remarkable 20-2-1 record, their first 20-win season since the 2007-08 campaign. After winning the BVAL title with a 10-0 record, the Pirates cruised to a 3-0 first-round playoff victory over Washington, their first playoff win since the 2007-08 season.

Deer Valley finishes BVAL play unbeaten The Deer Valley girls basketball team finished Bay Valley Athletic League play with a 10-0 record, as the Wolverines won the league championship for the fifth time in six seasons. Deer Valley (19-5) received the No. 4 seed for the North Coast Section Division I playoffs, and hosted No. 13 Liberty on Feb. 25 after this newspaper went to press.

Los Medanos off to a near perfect start The Los Medanos College baseball team improved to 8-1 on the season and extended its win streak to four games after defeating De Anza 7-5 and 13-0 in a double-header matchup on Feb. 22. This season the Mustangs have had a strong offensive attack, averaging over seven runs per game.

On deck CIF Championships, girls wrestling, Feb. 28-March 1 -- The top female wrestlers in California will compete for state titles this weekend in Visalia. Two BVAL wrestlers, Nicole Diaz and Tirza Alvarez, will compete at the state meet. Finals are at 6 p.m. on March 1. NCS championships, boys wrestling, Feb. 28-March 1, all day -- Section champions and state qualifiers will be determined at Newark Memorial High. Finals begin at 7 p.m. on March 1. Los Medanos at San Joaquin Delta, baseball, March 1 -- Two of the top teams in Northern California square off when Delta (9-2) hosts Los Medanos (8-1) in one of the last nonconference matchups.
Stars of the week Alex Bazan, Freedom boys wrestling -- Bazan beat Iosefa Papalaga of Antioch 5-2 to capture the 172-pound championship at the Bay Valley Athletic League meet on Feb. 21. Nicole Diaz, Liberty girls wrestling -- For the second consecutive year, Diaz made the finals for the 160-pound weight class at the NCS Championships. Chaz Meadows, Los Medanos baseball -- Meadows had four hits, including a double and a run scored in Los Medanos' double-header sweep over De Anza. Rodney Pope, Freedom basketball -- Pope led Freedom with 15 points in a huge victory over Antioch, which secured Freedom's first-ever BVAL title.
