The Pac-12 hired West Coast Conference commissioner Jamie Zaninovich as its deputy commissioner and chief operating officer Thursday.
Zaninovich replaces Kevin Weiberg, who is stepping down June 30 to work part time after four years as deputy commissioner.
Zaninovich has spent the past seven years as WCC commissioner, helping the conference through a period of unprecedented growth. The Cal baseball team (10-5) opens Pac-12 play against defending national champion UCLA (9-7) in a three-game series that begins Friday at Evans Diamond.

Penn State pushed a run across in the eighth inning en route to a 6-5 win over host Santa Clara (7-11). The Broncos' Greg Harisis went 2 for 4 with three runs. He raised his average to .342. A four-run fifth inning and a two-hit complete game by Katelyn Linford led the San Jose State softball team (12-11) to a 4-2 win over New Mexico State. Jessica Garcia had a two-run double in the fifth. Stanford's Kristian Ipsen and Bradley Christensen placed 1-2 in the men's 3-meter event at the NCAA Zone E Diving Meet in Colorado Springs. Both advanced to the NCAA championship next week in Minneapolis, along with the Cardinal's Alex Clay, who was runner-up in women's 1-meter event, the first of the three-day meet. Stanford's Mariah Stackhouse was named to the U.S. Curtis Cup team, the USGA announced. The matches against Great Britain & Ireland will be June 6-8 at St. Louis Country Club. Stanford senior Dwight Powell was named the Pac-12 Men's Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year. He has a 3.05 GPA and will graduate in June.
